Meet 4 Children's Authors and Illustrators at the South Milwaukee Public Library May 12

Celebrate Children's Book Week by meeting four local authors and illustrators at the South Milwaukee Public Library from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 12. Authors will read and talk about their books and illustrators will demonstrate drawing pictures for a book.

The entire family is invited to this free “Dive Into Reading” party, which also will include a question-and-answer session, creative activities, prizes, and refreshments. Books will be available for sale and signing.

The featured authors and illustrators are:

Gibbs Davis—an award-winning author of more than 20 books for children, including Wackiest White House Pets. The author recently co-hosted the first official Reading Discovery Event with Barbara Bush at the Bush Presidential Library in Texas. The event was videoconferenced to over 11,000 school children across Texas.

Janet Halfmann—an award-winning author of more than 30 children's books, including Little Skink's Tail. Little Skink's Tail recently was chosen by the Mom's Choice Awards as one of the three Best Children's Books for 2009. Janet will have kids wear costume tails to help tell Little Skink's story.

Carol Schwartz—an award-winning illustrator whose work has appeared in more than 45 children's books, including Fireflies and a six-book “Hide and Seek Science” series for Scholastic. Her work is included in the Society of Illustrators permanent collection of Outstanding Female Illustrators of the Past One Hundred Years.

Jeff Miracola—the illustrator of the children’s book Monster Isle, the story of a vacation that turns wild when a family gets stranded on an island filled with zany monsters. Jeff also has illustrated a variety of other products, including the world-famous trading-card game, Magic: the Gathering, from Wizards of the Coast.

The library event is free and no registration is required. The library is located at 1907 Tenth Avenue. The event is sponsored by the library, South Milwaukee Public Schools, and the Wisconsin chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. For more information, call the library at 414-768-8195.
