By Christopher Kuhagen

July 25, 2010 6:45 p.m. | Franklin baseball is headed to the state tournament for the second year in a row after a 4-3 win this afternoon against South Milwaukee in a WIAA sectional final in Cudahy.

Franklin got a run in the third to cut the lead to 2-1 and took the lead for good with a three-run, five-hit fourth inning.

The big hit in that inning was delivered by Adam Kaniewski, who had a two-RBI single. Evan Walton later drove in a run with a single that gave Franklin a 4-2 lead.

The two injured employees at the Appleton Electric foundry were transported to a hospital and the status of their injuries is unknown, said Fire Captain James Dorangrichia.

Appleton Electric officials evacuated the plant, located near 5th St. and Milwaukee Ave, prior to the Fire Department's arrival and later, homes on Michigan Ave. were also evacuated, Dorangrichia said.

Twelve other departments were called to the scene, and shortly before 3 a.m. the fire had been contained to a small area in one of the plant's multiple buildings, Dorangrichia said.

"Foundry fires are extremely dangerous," Dorangrichia said. "If you put water in the wrong place, you can cause a significant explosion."

The South Milwaukee Rockets dominated the Oak Creek Knights in all facets in the sectional championship game, 11-1, to earn their first berth into the WIAA softball state tournament since 1998. The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

South Milwaukee water bills expected to spike

By Tom Kertscher of the Journal Sentinel

May 25, 2010 4:56 p.m. | South Milwaukee - The city water utility is telling residents that its request for a 52% increase in revenues could lead to an increase of 41% to 52% in their bills.

When news of the utility's request, which is being made to the state Public Service Commission, surfaced last week, Water Superintendent Doug Fischer said he did not know how much a resident's bill likely could increase.

A notice on the city's Web site says residents could expect an increase of $8 to $10 per month.

That would amount to an increase of $96 to $120 per year - or 41% to 52% more than the annual water bill for the average homeowner, which Fischer said is $232.

South Milwaukee seeks 52% water rate increase

By Tom Kertscher of the Journal Sentinel

May 20, 2010 3:16 p.m. | South Milwaukee - The city's water utility is seeking permission from the state to raise its revenue by 52%.

Rates were raised 14% in 2004, 3% in 2008 and 3.8% last year, but those increases weren't enough to keep pace with rising costs and dramatically reduced water usage, Water Superintendent Doug Fischer said Thursday.

Water usage is down roughly 20% since 2004, Fischer said. The faltering economy and conservation measures have led industries to use far less water and households are using less as well, a phenomenon being seen around the country, he said.

Fischer also said that a recent modernization of the water plant's filtration system cost $9 million.

The rate increase would have to be approved by the state Public Service Commission following a public hearing. No hearing has yet been scheduled.
