Dec. 14, 2009 12:00 p.m. | The Airport Area Economic Development Task Force, a consortium of government and private-sector representatives that promotes Mitchell International Airport as an economic development catalyst, is proposing to become a non-profit corporation.
The new organization, which would be called the Milwaukee Gateway Aerotropolis Corp., would be better able to promote the airport, according to information being circulated among local governments.
The local governments are being asked to support the creation of the organization. On Tuesday, a resolution detailing the proposal will be considered by the Oak Creek Common Council.
The resolution says the task force has been meeting for two years and includes elected officials and staff from Oak Creek, Cudahy, Franklin, Greendale, Greenfield, Milwaukee, St. Francis and South Milwaukee, as well as from the airport, Milwaukee County, the Port of Milwaukee, and the state and federal governments.
The Airport Gateway Business Association, the South Suburban Chamber of Commerce, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Association of Commerce, the Greater Milwaukee Committee, Spirit of Milwaukee and VISIT Milwaukee also have been participating in the task force, according to the resolution.

Sept. 01, 2010 6:20 p.m. | A 29-year-old man convicted of fatally stabbing another man in South Milwaukee in April was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison and six years of extended supervision, according to court records.
Joshua David Wollinger pleaded guilty in July to second-degree reckless homicide in connection with the killing of Richard E. Ostrowski. Wollinger was originally charged with first-degree intentional homicide.
Ostrowski, 47, was killed April 18 inside Wollinger's apartment in the 1000 block of Milwaukee Ave., according to a criminal complaint.
Wollinger told investigators he and Ostrowski were drinking beer and smoking crack and marijuana prior to the stabbing, the complaint says. Wollinger first denied stabbing Ostrowski but later said he did so because Ostrowski tried to stab him, according to the complaint.

Aug. 27, 2010 10:37 p.m. | Two of the area's best quarterbacks squared off in the high school football season opener, but only South Milwaukee's Sam Oliden walked away with the victory.
Oliden threw two touchdown passes to Brandon Proesel and rushed for two more as the Rockets defeated visiting New Berlin West, 27-13, in a nonconference game between two 2009 WIAA playoff qualifiers Friday.
The South Milwaukee senior senior signal-caller rushed 10 times for 99 yards, including scores of 21 and 17 yards. He also completed 5-of-10 passes for 113 yards with one interception.
West's Dominique Bledsoe was nearly as impressive. He completed 15-of-26 passes for 266 yards including two touchdown strikes to receiver Chad Mathwig in the first half. But his receivers were plagued by drops in the second half. After starting 9-of-12 for 201 yards in the first half, Bledsoe was only 6-for-14 for 65 in the second.
He did get his team going, leading the Vikings on touchdown drives during their first two possessions, giving them a 13-6 lead with 2 minutes, 39 seconds remaining in the first quarter. But an impressive touchdown by Oliden early in the second gave the Rockets momentum for good.

Twelve other departments were called to the scene, and shortly before 3 a.m. the fire had been contained to a small area in one of the plant's multiple buildings, Dorangrichia said.
