April 15th is just around the corner. The library has tax forms available. You can also obtain tax forms on line for both the state and federal .
Parents can sign up their children for library story time starting on Monday, March 15th. Story time begins on Tuesday, April 6th at 10:30 am. There are stories, crafts and activities for kids 2 to 6 years of age.
Time to think about planting that garden and getting your yard in order. Check out the library's collection on gardening. A sampling of the books in the collection are: Best Trees for Your Garden by Allen Paterson. This book gives practical advice for selecting and purchasing trees. The book also has proven tips and techniques for placing, planting and maintaining garden trees
Other books on gardening are: The Wisconsin Garden Guide by Jerry Minnich This book is one of the most dependable guides to gardening in Wisconsin's challenging climate. For the organic gardener Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Organic gardening : the complete guide to natural & Chemical-free gardening is considered the definitive guide to gardening the natural way. The book explains key organic principles, has practical information on soil preparation, plant sowing, propagating and harvesting. Another excellent gardening book is The Victory Garden Companion by Michael Weishan. This book offers advice for creating a beautiful landscape for your home. Annuals for Dummies offers down to earth advice on growing healthy flowers as well as where and when to plant annuals for the brightest blast of color.
On Tuesday, March 30 the computer server is being replaced at the Milwaukee County Federated Library System headquarters. The online catalog and the databases will not be available. This will also affect the circulation system as well so that we will not beable to collect fines, etc.
The Library will be closed on Friday, April 2nd. We will reopen on Saturday, April 3 from 9 am to 4 pm.
The Friends will be having their spring book sale on Saturday, April 10th from 9:30 am to 3 pm. Great bargains!
The Library has three notaraies on staff. Call the library to be sure one is available.
There still is time to sign up for the winter story time. Story time is held on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 am. Register in person or call 768-8195, ext 3. No age limit.
The Library will be sponsoring a "basic computer skills class" on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 9:30 am. The class is free. We are limiting the class to 35 people. Call 768-8195, ext 2 to regisister or register in person at the referece desk. Some of the topics that will be covered are: How to work with computer commands and desktop, learn how to save, save as, copy and move files, creating a shortcut and many more.
The South Milwaukee Historical Society will be holding their annual dinner on Saturday, February 13th at Pat's Oak Manor. Cost is $22 per person. Call 764-2118 for reservations.
Hey kids: Join the Milwaukee Bucks Reading Challenge. Read 500 or more pages and you will receive a voucher for a Bucks game. The program is open to kids in 4th thru 10th grade. The program ends on February 13th.
Check out the library's new online databases. The LearningExpress Library database has over 800 online courses, tests and e-books to help you find a job or enhance your career. TKhere is job-search, resume-writing and interviewing skills improvement, career licensing/certification test preparation, workplace and academic skills improavement, SAT, ACT and graduate school admission test prep, GED test preparation and reading, writing and math skills improvement for grades 4 and up. There is also US citizenship tests as well as practice tests for the commercial drivers licenses.
Interested in learning a foreign language? Mango languages offers the user online language instruction from home or anwhere on the internet. Mango languages provides the person with a conversational focus on Spanish, French, German, Manadarin Chinese and Italian. There is also a course for Spanish speakers looking tolearn English as a second language.
These are all free from in the library. If you want to access it form home you will need your library card. If you don't have one stop in and get a library card. Bring two forms of identification and we will have a card for you in just a few minutes.
The Friends of the Library will be holding their Monday morning book sale on December 7, 2009 from 9:30-11 am. Great bargains!
The Youth Room will be holding their holiday family fun night on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 from 6 - 7:45 PM. There will stories, crafts and a visit with Santa.
You can register for a library card online. Go to the countycat.mcfls.org and below click on "need a library card?". This will enable you to reserve material. You have two weeks to come into the library to complete the registration process. You must bring in two forms of identification one of which has your current address.
Check out the many databases that are available to you from home as well as in the library. Some databases are: Automobile repair reference center, Consumer health, Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, Health Source, consumer edition as well as the nursing/academic edition, Newspaper Source Plus, Novelist, Regional Business News and Literary Reference Center.
The Library will be closed on Thursday, December 24 and Friday, December 25 and again on Thursday, December 31 and Friday, January 1. The Library will be open on Saturday, December 26 and January 2nd from 9 am to 4 pm. The Library Board and Staff want to wish you a very happy holiday.
The South Milwaukee Public Library Foundation will be holding their wine tasting event at the Library on Friday, October 16th from 7 - 9:30 PM. Tickets are $20 per person. Tickets are available at the door.
The Library is sponsoring a Saturday afternoon movie matinee at 1 pm in meeting room 1. On October 17 we will be showing the Philadelphia Story, October 24 Some Like It Hot, October 31 Sunset Boulevard, and on Nov. 7 Best Years Of Our Lives. The movies will be shown every Saturday, except Saturday, November 28 , December 26, and January 2. They will resume on Saturday, January 9th.

The Youth Room is sponsoring their annual Halloween family fun night on Wednesday, October 28th from 6 - 7:45 PM. We will have a magician, crafts and refreshments. Everyone (even adults) are encouraged to come in costume!
Check out the library's collection of holiday craft and cookbooks. Need Christmas decorating ideas? The library has a great collection of books that will help you in decorating for Christmas.
The library's color copier makes great copies of photographs.
Don't forget the Old Fashioned Christmas celebration on Sunday, November 29th. There will be a parade sponsored by the South Milwaukee Lions starting at 1 pm. The parade will run from 12th and Milwaukee to City Hall. Santa will be there as well as music by local choirs, crafts for the kids, food, and the tree lighting at 5:30.
The South Milwaukee Public Library Foundation, Inc. will be holding their annual wine tasting on Friday, October 16th from 7:00-9:30 PM at the library, 1907 10th Avenue, South Milwaukee, WI. Tickets are $20 per person. They are available at the door on the night of the event, or at M&I Bank-South Milwaukee, Parkway Floral or at the library circulation desk. The Garlic Mustard Pickers will provide the music.

Start your Christmas shopping early! The Friends of the Library will be holding their fall book sale on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 9:30-3. Their Monday morning sales will be held on October 5 and December 7 from 9:30-11.
Looking for something to do on Saturday afternoons? Stop in and watch a movie. The Saturday afternoon matinee begins at 1:00. The movies that will be shown include Casablanc, All about Eve, The Philadelphia Story, Some Like it Hot, and Sunset Boulevard. The program is free.

Well, the summer is half over. We had 533 children participate in the summer reading program. The program ended on Saturday, July 25th. Congratulations to all of the children who participated in the program.
The next book sale will be on Monday morning, August 10 from 9:30-11. Great bargains and lots of new material!
Happy birthday South Milwaukee Public Library. We are 110 years old. You are invited to a civic dinner in honor of the library’s birthday on Saturday, September 19th. The dinner will be held at the Knights of Columbus hall, 732 Badger Avenue, South Milwaukee. Tickets are $25 per person. Cocktails at 5:30 and dinner at 6:30 followed by a program. The dinner is sponsored by the South Milwaukee Public Library Foundation, Inc.
The South Milwaukee Public Library and the Milwaukee County Federated Library System received a grant Library Services and Technology grant to sponsor a “Drop in job help” program. A job trainer specialist will be available to help people learn how to complete on line job applications, write a resume online, search online job listings and obtain a free e-mail account. The program will be held on Tuesdays at the library from 9:30-12:30 starting on Tuesday, August 18th. You must sign up as each session is limited to 4 people. One may only sign up for one session as each session is a repeat. You may register at the circulation desk of the library.
Learn to knit! Starting on Monday, September 14th and for the next six Mondays a class will be held There is a $15 fee. Students must furnish one set of size 8 knitting needles, one skein of “sugar ‘n to teach people how to knit. The class is limited to six people. The class will run fro 6:00 -7:45 pm. cream” yearn, a tape measure and one large plastic darning needle. Call 768-8195, ext 4 circulation desk, to register or register in person.
