I am an Ultra-Conservative, Alpha-Male, True Authentic Leader, Type "C" Personality, who is very active in my community; whether it is donating time, clothes or money for Project Concern or going to Common Council meetings and voicing my opinions. As a blogger, I intend to provide a different viewpoint "The way I see it!" on various world, national and local issues with a few helpful tips & tidbits sprinkled in.
Here are two emails from readers I received recently.
Randy I am not sure if you saw the IQ Buffet in
Another downtown casualty
I saw this week that Breakwater records is having a closing sale. I had heard a couple of months ago about this rumor, but with the sign on the window, it has now come true. Another business in
Here are three comments you might have missed.
Joe s
Well, well, well let's get over not having a wal-mart, move on. Instead of us vs. them how about we. We have a nice town, we are fortunate to have a low crime rate, we now have an anti gang ordinance, we offer a lot, if one looks past the negative comments. My point is?? With any change it takes time, the city is cleaning up the rundown properties, but homeowners must also repair and keep their homes in good conditions. Not happy about the library condo's?? At least something different was attempted. Non business attitude? Lets have discussions with the store front landlords to improve their properties. Also the people of the area should try and support local businesses. We had success, jalapeno loco started in

Exactly what local fair would you say is worth going to for a family besides CityLounge, SoupLaddle, and Sheridans? Let me think... graveyard records? Cigar shop? laundry? one of the 15 corner taverns? Maybe one of the 10 used car lots? hmmmm.... Give a list of the local stores you frequent and maybe that will help get the word out on these shops.
You list low crime. I guess you haven’t been aware of the continual garage robberies and drug issues in
Working together is a great idea, but the problem is there is not a correct plan of action installed by the City government currently. No multi-lateral discussions are open. There are places that have already figured out how to revigorate a city, yet those lessons aren’t being followed.
Joe S makes a couple of good points, however, none of the successful businesses were started under the current mayor, and council. City Lounge,
If you haven't driven down
Walmart, like them or not, gave the city the best chance of building a retail complex with maybe an applebees, best buy, or other stores who gravitate to a major retail hub such as them. You can list stores until their are blue in the face, however, the question they ask of the city is.. Who is the anchor to bring us there? The park, while a vital asset, is NOT a retail anchor to bring in new business to the city.
The current elected officials have SHOT DOWN retail development on penn and
This city does have a lot of good things going for it, however, lacks leadership! Without that, not very much will change.
Cudahy is losing businesses at a record pace and there is no WalMart in site. All the house torn down recently on Layton and Barnard, wonder what they will be, oh wait from past experience of the iceport property they will remain empty eyesores and weed collection areas. This city needs new leadership badly. Our current leadership has no clue how to attract businesses or companies. Instead we got the infamous statement "Cudahy deserves better". Well here we are a few years later with nothing but higher taxes, rising crime rate, and more empty land and stores. Wow our mayor has done a wonderful job destroying a wonderful suburb that used to be business friendly and home to many. I will vote for anyone other then McCue this time and will help anyone other then his campaign just to rid this town of him and his bad choices.
The few WalMart haters may have won but look at your reward, Cudahy taxes have risen and will rise when the city has to pay for the clean up of the empty iceport land as well as the tear down of that structure. Enjoy your victory.
lets go back a few years, if i remember right it was mayor ray who came up with the iceport plan. what major business did he bring in? ok, what major business did mayor jake bring in ? all of this anger at mayor ryan is because of wal mart. was wal mart the saving grace of cudahy? ideas have been put forth, the landlord ordinance was great ( i am a landlord ) by keeping up your rental units it will not only give the landlord better tenants, also it will give the city a better image. turn around will take some time. as for taxes, i look at my city services. when i call the police they are there in very short notice. same with the fire dept. the streets, garbage pickup, plowing are all top notch.
How is a Wal-Mart going to solve all the problems that have been listed in this entry?
How is a Wal-Mart in Cudahy going to solve the drug problems plaguing Cudahy?
How is a Wal-Mart in Cudahy going to prevent businesses like IQ Buffet and Breakwater Records from going out of business?
How is a Wal-Mart in Cudahy going to cut the rash of garage robberies?
"Walmart, like them or not, gave the city the best chance of building a retail complex with maybe an applebees, best buy, or other stores who gravitate to a major retail hub such as them."
Randy, I don't know about you, but I haven't seen many Best Buys or Applebee's "gravitating" to Wal-Mart. In fact, I can't think of a single instance where there's a Best Buy in close proximity to a Wal-Mart, and I'm assuming that's due in large part to the fact that Wal-Mart and Best Buy are competitors when it comes to the sales of electronics, movies, music, etc.
Zach Delafield!
Well joe they plow the streets but rarely salt so they really don't clean up other then Layton ave, Packard ave, and Lake Dr. The streets need to be salted when they are as slippery as they get at times. So I am not happy there.
WalMart would have brought money and more businesses and more jobs, all are good for any community. Well except ours I guess. It seems our mayor thinks we want higher rents, higher taxes (so they can give them self's raises for the good job), and no jobs here. Wait until you see what happens to property taxes when there is no businesses to help pay for them. I guarantee that you won't be happy then.
I know Walmart will not solve the drug or crime problem but they do try to help financially in areas they are in. So they would have helped in their own way. The biggest cause of crime in Cudahy is poverty. Lack of jobs to pay rent, bills, buy food. I grew up on the north side of Milwaukee and this all happened there. It wasn't always a bad neighborhood. 10 more years of this guy and that's what it will be.
Delafield?
I'm willing to bet the presence of the movie theatre in Delafield has more to do with the Applebee's than the Wal-Mart. After all, the Wisconsin Applebee's franchise and Marcus Theatres were once both owned by the Marcus Corporation.
Randy, if your theory that Wal-Mart as the anchor for retail development holds true, why aren't all the Milwaukee-area Wal-Marts surrounding by Applebee's and Best Buy stores?
Not everything fits into a neat little box Zach.
How about this?
Tell me a day you have off and I will come by and pick you up. We will drive to Delafield. We will stop and talk to the Wal-Mart Manager, the Target Manager, The Movie Theater Manager, Applebee’s Manager and then the Delafield Mayor.
Your hatred for Wal-Mart is just dripping off. You must not have been reading my Wal-Mart things from the get go. Wal-Mart is not a sliver bullet, but a piece to the puzzle.
Cure all, no that was Obama wasn’t it?
Just keep bringing up the same tiring and old points against Wal-Mart and big box. No health insurance (Badger Care since Doyle is increasing those on it), mom and pop stores (which ones), non-union (yes the real problem for you), crime (not any more than others and much less than a movie theater) and so on. Just keep them up, while I yawn.
Please look at a map of Highway 83 and all of the retail there after Wal-Mart has come in first.
Randy, I don't "hate" Wal-Mart; while I'm not a fan, the bigger issue for me is that I'd like to see Cudahy try for something better. Cudahy can do better than a Wal-Mart for that site, but if Wal-Mart is the best you think Cudahy can do, then so be it.
If you didnt believe Walmart was a piece of the restructuring puzzle, then what stores or structures are better in your eyes and are you working on bringing those to Cudahy?
Hmm, do you think Gucci wants to build next to a bacon plant?
