Family lured Jerrianne and her husband to South Milwaukee in 2002 from Southern California where she worked as, first, a journalist, then, as a court information officer. She now stays busy with media-relations consulting, playing with her three grandchildren (part of the lure), writing, discovering her new environs, and hoping her garden will produce before the first fall frost.
SM Walmart Public Hearings Reminder
The first two in a series of public hearings concerning on the South Milwaukee Walmart project is at City Hall, 2424 15th Avenue, on Monday, Oct. 3, at 6:30 p.m. before the Community Development Authority.
These two hearings concern modifications of the project development plan for tax incremental financing district No. 2 and the sale of property in TID 2 to Gatlin Development, the Walmart project developer.
What a Difference a Year Makes
Thank you to whoever did it. Students, parents, faculty, magnanimous volunteers. Whever you are. Thank you for cleaning the waste paper from the Oak Creek Parkway side of the high school that was celebratorily tp'd on Homecoming night.
Last year remnants of Homecoming-festivity toilet paper hung from trees and clumped the ground along the Parkway well into the holidays. Here it is only mid-October and the area tp'd this year is paperless.
The Snopes Arrive in South Milwaukee
William Faulkner wrote his Snopes trilogy, "The Hamlet", "The Town" and "The Mansion", in the 1940s and '50s, but it could have written today.
The novels are set in Yoknapatawpha, Mississippi, but could have been set in South Milwaukee.

Friends of South Milwaukee
A couple hundred South Milwaukeeans attended an informational meeting tonight of the newly minted "Friends of South Milwaukee" whose first campaign is to oppose the proposed Walmart at 222 N. Chicago Avenue.
The Common Council will take a final vote on Tuesday, Nov. 1, on a zone change, which will give Walmart the green light to build a 115,000-square-foot store that will be open 24 hours a day in a largely residential neighborhood.
South Milwaukee's 'Energizer Bunny'
South Milwaukee children's author Janet Halfmann, like the "Energizer Bunny", just keeps on going and going.
She not only has published dozens of books for children, she keeps on winning awards. The latest is Teachers' Choice Award for her adorable picture book, Fur and Feathers. This is the second time Janet has received this prestigious award from Learning Magazine. She previously won it for her book, Little Skink's Tail. LOCAL AUTHOR WINS SECOND TEACHERS’ CHOICE AWARD
South Milwaukee author Janet Halfmann has been awarded the 2012 Teachers’ Choice Award for Picture Books for Fur and Feathers. The book, illustrated by Laurie Allen Klein, is from Sylvan Dell Publishing.

The group, Friends of South Milwaukee, that held an informational meeting last week about the Common Council's approval of a Walmart store at 222 N. Chicago Ave. has a website. www.friendsofsouthmilwaukee.com.
The most graphic and disturbing page on the site is "How It Will Hurt Our Community," which includes photos of the trash and debris around existing Walmart stores, and the empty storefronts of five abandoned Walmarts in Southeast Wisconsin.
