Barbiere's Italian Inn - South

businesses, So. Milwaukee, restaurant, food, bar

There are plenty of Italian restaurants around here, and Barbiere's opened up a new location in downtown South Milwaukee just recently.  Out of curiosity, I took my mom there Saturday for dinner.  I've eaten at their other location before, and their food has always been very good.

Their storefront used to be a small lunchtime deli type place that was only open during the noon hour  to serve the Bucyrus Erie lunch crowd.  I had asked the store owner once why they didn't stay open for dinner and he said that they only wanted to concentrate on the lunch crowd.  South Milwaukee is a tough place to have a restaurant it seems, as many don't stay very long.  My thought is, if you want customers, you need to be open at the times that people want to eat - which means dinner time and beyond.

I was really surprised that Barbiere's took over the other side of the building too, and opened up seating in the back of the building also. The wood floors and old brick wall are nice touches.  The other side has a full bar with tallbacked wooden chairs and a classy look.  It looks inviting and I have a feeling that the bar will draw some regular customers.  The clean open look combined with the wood and brick is a warm and comfy combination.

I had their lasagna and mom had spaghetti.  Both were very good.  The waitress was attentive and pleasant. There were several other tables filled, and as we were leaving it was getting busier. The whole experience was very good, and I think I'll go back soon to check out the bar area while I wait for a pizza for take-out.

They have great hours, basically 11am to 11pm and the bar is open till regular bar close time.

  1. I've been curious to try Barbiere's, but I'll definitely have to stop in and grab a bite to eat!
  2. I doubt you'll try them. You will just be around to comment if they close about how south milwaukee's downtown lost yet another business.
  3. Oh ye of little faith...
  4. They have take out too and their food tasted the same as the original restaurant on Bluemound Rd.
  5. Wende, if I remember correctly, the owner of Barbiere's is somehow related to the folks from Mama Mia's, so the food must be good.
  6. The pizza was just ok and the ravioli was pricey for the amount i received.
  7. Is it family friendly? On that note maybe the term 'family friendly' should be determined. I read the review of Dobies in St.Francis in the Sentinal and it was pretty spot on. However, I think they mentioned it was family friendly. A restaurant that doesnt have a non-smoking area is not family friendly. While I loved the place and the prices, I'd never go back or take my kids because of the smoking. I dont appreciate someone lighting up blowing smoke at me after Ive just dropped $25 for a steak.
  8. I'd have to agree with JTozz...an establishment that doesn't offer a nonsmoking section hardly seems family friendly.
  9. Guess you really haven't been there yet. Barbiere's is entirely smoke free.
  10. Melissa, you seemed really concerned about my eating habits. Would you like to know what I had for dinner tonight? I grilled some hot dogs and brats.

As I noted in my previous comments, I'll have to stop in for dinner at Barbiere's, because if the food's anything close to Mama Mia's, then it's gotta be good.
