50th Anniversary of Purgold Cross Country Meet
On Saturday, Oct. 2nd, I attended the 50th anniversary Cudahy Purgold Cross Country meet at Sheridan Park. The Cudahy team is now the Cudahy-St. Francis team. I remember running in Sheridan Park in the late 70's and early 80's when I was a High School Cross Country runner for the Whitnall Falcons. It was a cold day for a meet but at least the rain held out until after the meet was over.
What a great use of Sheridan Park! This meet could not have been safely held without our fantastic County Park system. This is just one more example of the importance of our parks. I hope everyone who had the opportunity to see this event appreciates the importance of our County Parks and the critical role they play in the lives of runners.

South Milwaukee's own Garlic Mustard Pickers, specializing in Celtic music has two performances coming up this month.

Briggs & Al's Run/Walk Oct. 9th
Once again it is time for Briggs & Al's Run and walk for Children's Hospital! This event is being held on Saturday, Oct. 9th. The run starts at 10:30 am on the Marquette University campus and ends at the Summerfest Grounds. The race is an 8k which is approx. 4.95 miles. ( Eight kilometers is 51 yards short of five miles.)
This is a major fundraiser for Children's Hospital in Milwaukee. There are usually somewhere in the neighborhood of 15,000 runners and walkers.
Campaign style hints at the kind of senator he would be
One great appeal of Sen. Russell Feingold is his accessibility and responsiveness. And the listening sessions he holds in every Wisconsin county every year at which he invites Wisconsinites to let him know their concerns and request information and assistance.
I've attended a couple of those sessions and witnessed him asking people who tried to shout down someone whose political/philosophical viewpoint differed from Feingold's to let the man speak -- which he did and to which Feingold replied that while he disagreed, he respected the man's position and for speaking. He also said that hearing everyone's opinions was important and challenged him to examine his own positions.
When campaign spending really begins
A mistake repeated begs to be corrected. Since my letter to the editor doing that didn't make the cut, I'm using this space to do so.
Twice the Journal Sentinel has said Sen. Russell Feingold strained credulity by claiming he has been outspent by his opponents every time he's run for U.S. Senate.
Secure the borders with what smaller government?
I watched the debate last night between U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold and challenger Ron Johnson.
Mr. Johnson said solving the illigal immigration problem is simple -- secure the nation's borders and enforce the law.

Runners & Walkers Raise $1 Million for Hospital
On Saturday, Oct. 9th I completed Brigg's & Al's Run along with 15,500 other runners and walkers. It was a beautiful autumn day; sunny and in the 60's or low 70's. A perfect day for a run! This event raised over $1,000,000 for Children's Hospital. That is an amazing accomplishment.

October events at the South Milwaukee Library
Everyone is invited to the South Milwaukee Library Foundation, Inc.'s annual wine tasting on Friday, October 15th from 7 - 9:30 pm. Sample a wide variety of wines provided by Otto's of Bayview. Wine and cheese will be available. Music is being provided by the Danny Nimphius band. Tickets are $20 per person and are available at the door on the evening of the wine tasting. Tickets are also available at the M&I Bank and Parkway Floral or the circulation desk of the library.
The Foundation is also sponsoring a silent auction, which started on Monday, October 11th and will run through 4 pm on Saturday, October 23rd. Successful bidders will be notified on Monday, October 25th. The items are on disiplay on the first floor of the library.
The Friends of the Library will be holding their fall Saturday book sale on Saturday, November 13 from 9:30-3. The last sale of the season will be held on Monday, December 6 from 9:30 to 11.

And we wonder why sewage backs up in SM homes
It's been two weeks since our collective property, Oak Creek Parkway adjacent to South Milwaukee High School and beyond past the stone-arched railroad overpass, was strewn by vandals with what eventually ends up in sewers. Toilet paper. Two weeks since some high schoolers' parents -- and even a school official or two -- said, with a "kids-will-be-kids" wink and grin, that the culprits would return and clean it up and that the rain would wash it away.
Well, if the kids came back, they sure didn't clean it all up. Neither has the rain -- including one extremely hard downpour -- washed it away.
Sheridan Park Friends to Meet Sat Oct. 16th
The Sheridan Park Friends will plant daffodil bulbs in the ground around Sheridan Pavilion and possibly at the Patrick Cudahy statue. The group will meet on Saturday, Oct. 16th at 9 am at Sheridan Pavilion.
The public is welcome. Bring a trowel and kneeling pad if you have them. There will be a snack afterward for the volunteers.
What a great way to get involved! It is great to see people stepping up to the plate and going to bat for our priceless County Parks. Sheridan Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the entire County Park system. The County may be in financial crisis but we have dedicated people who are willing to spend their time and energy to preserve and maintain our priceless park.

Before you burn your house down...
What strikes me in this mid-term election climate is that some people want to turn out incumbents regardless of their competence, effectiveness or whatever and without regard to who -- or what -- will replace them, and what the consequences might be. After Christine "Where is separation of church and state in the U.S. Constitution?" O'Donnell won Deleware's senatorial GOP primary, some people said they didn't care who she was or how unqualified she might be, they would vote for her because they wanted a change. To me that's like burning your house down because someone says they've got a nicer place for you to live -- and even show you a picture of it -- only to find that that nicer place is nothing but a cardboard cutout.

Russ Feingold sat in my office for an endorsement interview the other day and held forth knowledgeably for almost an hour on many issues, but I was most struck by his remarks on health care.
Feingold’s willingness to be the nation’s only U.S. Senate candidate daring to campaign on his support for President Obama’s health care reform law has made national headlines. The Wall Street Journal pegged an entire article to how the three-term Democrat was going it alone in that regard.
