New Kid's View

Family lured Jerrianne and her husband to South Milwaukee in 2002 from Southern California where she worked as, first, a journalist, then, as a court information officer. She now stays busy with media-relations consulting, playing with her three grandchildren (part of the lure), writing, discovering her new environs, and hoping her garden will produce before the first fall frost.

The parks, and particularly Grant Park, have topped the list of amenities we show off to visitors since we moved to South Milwaukee nearly six years ago.

We were glad no one visited us during the height of dandelion blooming season last year, though. They would have seen a sea of yellow dandelion manes and a week or so later, a forest of balding dandelion puff stalks. Has there been a decrease in funding for weed-eradication?

I would also like to ask about the leash law – like, why one exists since it’s not enforced, or how about changing the law to allow dogs to run off-leash in grassy areas, but keeping it in force – and enforce it – on the bike/pedestrian paths. And what can be done about irresponsible dog walkers who don’t clean up their charges’ droppings.

So if you have a burning question or something that’s bugging you or a helpful suggestion about Grant Park, come on out on Thursday. For further information, contact Friends of Grant Park board members Don Lawson, 764-0612, Betsy Abert, 764-9244, or Tom Gardner, 856-0535.
