Our doorbell just rang…
I open the door to find a young man, approximately 12 years old, standing with an order form in his hand.
“Hello. Would you like to buy some movie tickets?” That was the sales pitch.
I politely asked him, “Who are you, where do you go to school, and what cause does this support?” Stopped in his tracks, he actually had to look down at his paper work and stammered, “Um, so I can raise money to go to Washington D.C.”
That still wasn’t quite the answer I was looking for. I don’t mean to grill you, nice young man from our neighborhood. But I seem to remember you and a similar pitch when you wanted to sell me a Christmas wreath to support your Scout troop. I had to pull information out of you that time, too.
Clearly you are old enough to do your own door-to-door shtick. But Mom or Dad need to coach you in Salesmanship 101. I certainly wish you well in your fundraising endeavors, and we always enjoy helping out the youth who live nearby.
But you’ll probably get a few more yeses if you improve your technique.
