New Kid's View
Family lured Jerrianne and her husband to South Milwaukee in 2002 from Southern California where she worked as, first, a journalist, then, as a court information officer. She now stays busy with media-relations consulting, playing with her three grandchildren (part of the lure), writing, discovering her new environs, and hoping her garden will produce before the first fall frost.
Above and Beyond the Call of Duty
On this last day of Teacher Appreciation Day, I want to give a great shout-out to E.W. Luther teacher Janet Horrigan. I volunteer a few hours a week in her classroom and she has instilled in me an even greater respect for public school teachers than I did before. She is about the most capable teacher I've seen in action, handles crises and challenges so smoothly and in a way to minimize disruption and negative impact on her class.
Her diligence to being prepared, having to spend many hours attending after-school meetings, evening school functions and many more school-related duties that have to be attended to on evenings and weekends is impressive -- and exhausting.
Then, there she was this week checking on a couple of Little League baseball games some of her students were playng in in between her own daughter's softball doubleheader.
I salute you, Janet Horrigan, and your fellow public school teachers. Thank you for your above-and-beyond-the-call-of-duty service.
