Family lured Jerrianne and her husband to South Milwaukee in 2002 from Southern California where she worked as, first, a journalist, then, as a court information officer. She now stays busy with media-relations consulting, playing with her three grandchildren (part of the lure), writing, discovering her new environs, and hoping her garden will produce before the first fall frost.

An African safari, autographed Packers and Brewers memorabilia, airline tickets, Resorts International vacation package, Trek mountain bike, UW and Marquette basketball tickets to sold-out games, entertainment and restaurant package raffles and bargain buys to kick off holiday shopping.
All of that and more, to the accompaniment of Celtic music by the Garlic Mustard Pickers, will be part of the Rotary Club of Mitchell Field (RCMF) Charitable Foundation's Annual Auction Dinner on Friday, Oct. 23, at 5:30 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, 5311 South Howell Ave. That's right across Howell from Mitchell International Airport.
New Market in Town!
Madison Ave Market, a Mediterranean Food & Deli, opened for business on Monday at 925 Madison Avenue in South Milwaukee..
If you like byrek (light, flakey filo (dough) rolled wafer thin and filled with creamy fresh feta cheese, a ground beef mixture, or a feta cheese and spinach mixture), savory fresh-made soup, unique stick-to-the ribs sandwiches, and breads baked daily, this place is for you. Cheeses and meats, coffee and cappicchino service and shelves of gourmet and ethnic food products are the basics. The store even has WiFi, a laptop for customers' use and a sit-at counter.
Lasting impressions
So it rained. Washed all the toilet paper out of the trees along 15th Avenue and Oak Creek Parkway across the street and down the block from the high school some juveniles strung in them last week. But as I walked home from the Post Office today amidst wads of debris littering the ground, the lasting impression I have of them is sewage.
mmm-mmm in South Milwaukee
We were a little late to the new Madison Ave Market's Grand Opening tonight. By the time we got there most of the free samples of the baked goodies and cheese and meat snacks were gone. The reason? Lots of people who got there on time. And that's a good thing. We did get some scrumptuois eggplant dip on a couple of pieces of fresh-baked bread and a a wedge of to-die-for honey-dripping baklava Here's hoping they keep returning to the market that specializes in Mediteranrean food and delicatessen fare and continue to patronize this fledglng new South Milwaukee business at 925 Madison Avenue -- just east of Chicago Aveenue.
Trick or Treat Confusion in South Milwaukee
The Sunday before Halloween from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. That's been the 'trick or treat' tradition for the seven-plus years we've lived in South Milwaukee. Our neighbors across the street say it's been that way for the 15 years they've lived here.
This year it's changed -- at least for the few people who know about it.

Letting South Milwaukee Know
The South Milwaukee Common Council has an unenviable job. First, it has to make decisions. Then it has to somehow let residents know what those decisions are.
True, we residents could and should be more proactive about learning what the Council is doing. Like attend Common Council meetings or read meeting minutes either at city hall or on the city's website, except that they aren't current. Perhaps as part of the fallout of having to do more with less, the last meeting for which the minutes are posted on the website as of this Thursday (Oct. 15) was Sept. 15.

Hoan Questions Remain Unanswered
Milwaukee Magazine ran a story in its November issue (I know, I know. It's still October) calling for the Hoan Bridge to be torn down (complete with exclamation point).
What the article didn't have were answers to questions raised in public meetings Milwaukee County Supervisor Patricia Jursik held in South Millwaukee and Cudahy during the summer. Question such as:
Hoan Spared Downsizing--For Now.
Interesting article on page 3B of today's Journal Sentinel. Apparently, the six-lane wide, 125-feet high Hoan Bridge will not be regressed to a four-lane, 45-feet high equivilent of a drawbridge for the forseeable future (a few decades).
Instead, the Hoan will most likely be resurfaced, reenforced and repainted. The reason? Not enough time to do a full bridge-replacement study before preparation needs to begin for the repairs, which have to get underway by 2011 to avoid certain traffic restrictions.
